Future Directions Wins Learning Disability and Autism Awareness Training Contract

17th July 2020 |

Future Directions has won a contract to deliver Mandatory Training in Learning Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Conditions. We will be one of fifteen groups in England who will create a training package, in association with Health Education England and the people we support. This approach will improve our understanding of learning disabilities, through personal and professional perspectives.

Starting out as a twelve month trial, the Learning Disability and Autism Training package is dedicated to the memory of Oliver McGowan. Oliver’s death in 2016 could have been prevented by improved awareness of learning disabilities and autism. Following a spell in hospital, the medication he was prescribed made him worse, as did the use of restraint and outdated practices.

Its aim is to involve people with a learning disability, autism spectrum conditions or both. Also their families and carers for opinion and concerns about their treatment. Listening to all those involved and showing respect to their opinions and concerns is another, fitting in with the Future Directions values of putting people first and being transparent. As does doing something about it and working in partnership with them.

The group of fifteen organisations will be led by BILD. Other partners include City and Guilds, the Care Quality Commission and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
