In memory of Barbara Harvey

12th September 2017 |

As a mother of a son with autism, Barbara was determined not only should her son receive the right care and support but also Barbara drew on her own experiences to advocate the development of better services for all people with learning disabilities within the community.

Barbara was a governor at Calderstones for many years, helping to bring about change and ensuring adults with learning disabilities had a voice and were being listened to.  Barbara was a very strong and caring woman, this was apparent to anybody who had the pleasure of meeting her.

Barbara was a passionate supporter of ensuring people receive the right support to live independently in the community. Barbara was always a strong and very vocal supporter of Future Directions. Barbara would be a critical friend in that she would be the first to tell us how we can improve in our care but also always gave encouragement when we were getting it right. Barbara was a valuable and active member of our friends and family forum, allowing us to know first hand how families such as hers felt about the care and support their loved one was receiving. The greatest compliment Barbara ever paid Future Directions was enabling us to  support her son and we will do our very best to ensure Steven receives all the guidance and care he needs to live a happy, independent and fulfilled life as possible. We will miss Barbara tremendously and we send our thoughts and love to the whole Harvey family.
