River Beal Café: Where Communities Come Together

River Beal Café, Summer 2021.

From concept to completion, the story of River Beal Café

After a year of planning, the River Beal Café opened in Milnrow, near Rochdale, in October 2020. As well as offering its customers the best tasting tea and coffee in the area, it is an important community facility. To date, it has hosted craft workshops and attracted local groups. It is also a Safe Place under The Rochdale Safe Place Scheme which we manage via our SPICE Group.

After two weeks of trading in October 2020, Greater Manchester was put into severe lockdown measures. This meant cafés couldn't open for table service indoors and only offer takeaway drinks and snacks. Reluctantly, we had to close River Beal Café, which gave us time to organise community activities for its eventual reopening.

By April 2021 we were able to reopen due to changes in lockdown measures. With our duty of care to the people we support and the wider community, we reopened on the 17th May 2021.

We use the finest high quality ingredients at River Beal Café and follow strict preparation guidelines. The café also provides a range of free magazines, newspapers and free access to WiFi. Within the Riverbeal Court development, River Beal Café's unit is approximately 86 square metres - including seating areas with fifteen tables, a kitchen, office, storage and toilet areas.

Our menu includes espresso-based coffee drinks like lattes, mochas, cappuccinos, and flat whites. It also offers a range of pastries, cakes, salads, sandwiches and toasties and has a full-time manager. It also supports a number of part-time baristas/volunteer posts - which have been offered to local vulnerable adults as paid employment opportunities.

Our convenient location and excellent customer service means River Beal Café will build a steady repeat customer base. The food and drink we offer are of the highest quality. We pride ourselves on great service and in having plenty of seating areas, indoors and outdoors. It is a great place to meet with friends, relax and enjoy a great cup of coffee.

Social Value

A satisfied customer enjoying a morning snack.River Beal Café is based on a number of key social value principles and will have a positive impact on the local community. It will bring people together and provide a hub for the local community where people can build meaningful connections, share interests with one another, and help reduce social isolation. We will also provide jobs and skills development, which in turn will help build people’s confidence, resilience and support independence.

This has been a huge project for us and we would love you to follow our journey on Facebook (River Beal Café) and on Instagram (river_beal_cafe). You can follow these pages for special offers and news on social events at River Beal Café.
