The Role of a Personal Assistant at Future Directions

22nd August 2018 |

The role of a Personal assistant provides a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. Yes, a small part of the role is personal care and day to day tasks, but it is so much more than that. It is a happy, fun and rewarding role. By living out our values you can make a real difference to people’s lives.

Future Directions’ mission and purpose is to enable people to have maximum choice and control over their lives. Personal Assistants ensure this happens by working alongside the people we support to enable them to live the life that they choose and for their life to be the happiest and best life possible.

Personal Assistants play a key role in enhancing individual’s daily living skills and increasing their independence. By living out our values they provide quality support that adapts to meet the changing wants and needs of the people they support.

To increase and promote independence, Personal Assistants actively support and encourage the people they support to access their local community. As a personal assistant you could find yourself and the person you support; on a train to visit the delights of the city’s museums, enjoying a shopping trip, immersed in a crowd cheering on a football team, burning the calories at the local gym, choosing the weekly food shop, horse riding, learning something new at a local computer class, going to a rock gig, relaxing by the lake and catching a huge fish… the list is endless!

Living out our values

The role of a personal assistant is about putting people first, learning about the person you support, their wants, needs and ambitions, being creative and adaptable to find out how to support them to live the life they want and then going the extra mile, putting plans into action, making their wants, needs and ambitions a reality.

Future Directions is running with the theme #ICAN. #ICAN showcases the excellent achievements of the people we support, achievements that are a result of staff teams working in partnership with the person they support to find ways and put plans into action to make their ambition to come true.

We will be filming at our annual Celebration Day in October where lots of #ICAN stories will be showcased. Look out for our #ICAN film later this year!
