Green Superheroes
We have recruited a team of Green Superheroes.
The idea for this project came from Eric, a SPICE member and person we support in Trafford. He drew a picture of a ‘Recycling Man’ and told us that he wanted to show people how to recycle and tell them why it is so important.
This project includes:
Training:
We have developed workshops to raise awareness about different ways that people can help to save our planet, including recycling and using less energy.
Our workshops are delivered by people who have learning disabilities or who are autistic themselves, so they are accessible and easy to understand. We aim to make learning fun, whilst giving people the skills to lead greener lives.
Developing resources:
We make films and activity books to help people learn about how to help save the planet. You can watch our film about how to save energy at home at https://www.inournature.uk/tips/energy-saving-tips-from-future-directions
You can download our activity book about saving energy at home athttps://www.inournature.uk/tips/green-superhero-workbook
We also made a Good for You, Good for the Planet cookbook to help reduce food waste. Each recipe has step-by-step photos and simple instructions, so that people can focus on doing the instructions one at a time. [You can download the cookbook here – link – saved in SPICE / Easy Read cook book/Good for You, Good for the Planet Cookbook FINAL.pdf]. We have also made some videos of some of the recipes, which can be watched here [in SPICE / Easy Read cook book/cook book videos].
Art and Craft Sessions:
We run monthly sessions in Sale and Rochdale. We use materials that would otherwise be thrown away to create something new.
Previous sessions have included making musical instruments (followed by a sing song and dance), designing clothing (followed by a fashion parade), and making draught excluders. We have also held sessions themed on saving water and reducing plastic waste.
Litter pick walks:
We hold regular litter pick walks. We provide equipment and plan a route that is accessible for all. We usually meet in a local café for a catch up and a drink before or after the walk.
Swap shops and repair cafes:
We hold swap shops and are setting up repair cafes where people can bring things that are broken to be fixed.
In 2023, Eric won the Global Recycling Foundation Creative Innovation Award for his dedication to saving our planet. The Green Superheroes also won the Spirit of Manchester Inspirational Campaign award in 2024 (you can watch the 1 minute film about what the Green Superheroes do at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3p6SR1EdX0).
This project was originally set up with funding and support from Suez Recycle for Greater Manchester Community Fund. Since then we have gone from strength to strength and continue to receive a range of community grants and support from In Our Nature(https://www.inournature.uk/) and the Renew Community Fund (https://recycleforgreatermanchester.com/community-fund/) to ensure continued success of this project. Our aim is to encourage change in individuals and families across Greater Manchester to recycle, reduce, reuse and repair to help our environment.
