As part of our Hate Crime/Keeping Safe project run by SPICE, we manage Safe Place Schemes in Rochdale Borough and Stockport Borough.

The Rochdale Safe Place Scheme is supported by Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale Safer Communities Partnership, and the Stockport Safe Place Scheme is supported by Stockport Council.

What is a Safe Place?

A Safe Place is somewhere people can go if they feel scared, are lost or need help when they are out and about. It can be a shop, office, cafe or public building such as a library or leisure centre. All Safe Places display the Safe Places logo.

How to Become a Safe Place

We are actively looking for businesses and organisations to join the scheme and help make Rochdale or Stockport a safer place. If you or your organisation are based in Rochdale or Stockport and are interested in becoming a Safe Place, we would love to hear from you. You can download a Registration Form here or email jennifer.neville@futuredirectionscic.co.uk for further information.

What is involved?

By becoming a member of the scheme, you agree to:

  • Support a vulnerable person who (on arrival at your building) may be confused, lost, or have been a victim of crime. When they arrive, they may show you their safe places card.
  • Contact one of the people named on the back of their safe places card, or the emergency services.
  • Allow the vulnerable person to wait at your premises until the named person, police or an ambulance arrives.

This scheme is intended to provide a short-term place of safety. You will either direct someone, or help them contact someone else who can help them further. You are not expected to provide ongoing support, or become involved in any complex situations.

Benefits of joining the scheme:

  • Increase public awareness of your business or service.
  • Improve your business image in the community, and social impact.
  • Help people in a vulnerable situation and increase the confidence of vulnerable people when they are out and about.
  • You will receive a welcome pack which is available to support you, and can help you have better interaction and relations with customers.
  • Help make your locality a welcoming and safer place for everyone.
